Independent front suspension is a performance advantage on the trail and on the highway — until you lift it beyond what the factory CV joints were designed to handle. On Toyota and Nissan IFS platforms, a 3” or taller suspension lift drives the front differential upward relative to the axles, creating steep operating angles that cause vibration, accelerated wear, and eventual CV failure. What does a differential drop bracket do?

A differential drop kit relocates the front differential downward — typically 1–1.5” — to match the new suspension geometry created by the lift. The brackets bolt to the factory differential mounting points and add spacer length, effectively dropping the diff to restore the CV axles to a near-factory operating angle. The result is smooth power delivery, no vibration, and normal CV joint lifespan.

This is not an optional upgrade on lifted IFS trucks. Running a 3”+ lift without differential drops puts constant stress on CV joints and boots. The vibration is often dismissed as a tire balance issue until the damage is already done.

Which vehicles require a differential drop after lifting?

Any IFS-equipped truck or SUV lifted 3” or more is a candidate. For Franklin Overland, that means primarily Toyota Tacoma (first through third gen), Toyota 4Runner (third gen and later), and Nissan Frontier and Xterra. The Tundra uses a similar IFS layout and benefits from differential drops at comparable lift heights.

Body-on-frame vehicles with solid front axles — like older Jeeps or certain Land Cruisers — don’t use differential drops because the axle housing and differential move together with the suspension.

Are differential drops included in lift kits?

Most complete suspension lift kits from Toytec, Icon, and Dobinsons for Toyota IFS platforms include differential drop brackets. However, budget kits and spacer-only lifts frequently leave them out. If you’re buying a kit from an online retailer and the hardware list doesn’t explicitly mention differential drops, assume you need to source them separately.
