FENDER & WHEEL WELL TRIMMING

Fitting larger tires is the most meaningful off-road upgrade you can make, but geometry doesn’t lie: a tire that clears at the center will often contact fender plastic or inner liner material at full steering lock or during full suspension compression on the trail. Body trimming is the process of removing or reshaping material to give your tires the clearance they need. At Franklin Overland in Birmingham, trimming is planned around your specific lift, wheel offset, and tire size — not done reactively after you hear the first rub.

When does a lifted truck actually need body trimming?

The trigger point for most builds is the combination of a 2 to 3 inch lift, a tire at or above 33 inches, and a wheel with near-zero or slightly negative offset. At that combination, stock wheel well trim and the inner fender liner are almost always in the path of the tire during full steering lock or aggressive suspension articulation. If you’re running Oak Mountain State Park trails with full-lock switchbacks, that clearance problem becomes very real, very quickly.

Vehicles with more pronounced wheel well flares — the 5th-gen 4Runner, the GX470, some Tacoma trim levels — have more built-in clearance than others. We measure before we cut. What gets cut — plastic fender liner or metal fender?

In most builds running 33-inch tires, only the inner plastic fender liner and any lower plastic wheel well trim needs to be removed or trimmed. This is the fender liner attached with plastic clips inside the wheel well — it has no structural role and does not affect your warranty. Removing or trimming it is straightforward and reversible if needed.

Metal fender cutting is required less frequently, typically only on builds running 35-inch or larger tires, or builds with significant lift and negative-offset wheels that push the tire far outboard. When metal cutting is required, we finish all edges with a grinder and protective edge tape so no bare metal or sharp corners remain near the tire sidewall.

 

Why do sharp edges cause tire damage, and how is it prevented?

Sidewall rubber is the most vulnerable part of a tire. Unlike the tread face, which takes direct rock hits regularly, the sidewall is thin and not designed for abrasion. A sharp plastic edge or an unfinished metal lip pressing against a flexed sidewall during articulation will cut through it — not immediately, but after enough flex cycles. By the time you see the sidewall bubbling, the damage is done.

Every trim job we do finishes all cut edges with smooth radius corners and protective edge material where metal is exposed. This applies to plastic liner cuts as well — a clean, deburred plastic edge won’t cut rubber, but a factory snap line or a rough cut absolutely will. This step is non-negotiable in a proper trimming job.

Can I do body trimming myself with a box cutter and pliers?

You can remove the plastic inner liner clips and pull the liner for basic clearance, but rough cuts and unfinished edges are how tire sidewalls get sliced. If you’re doing anything beyond pulling a loose liner, the finishing work — smooth edges, deburring, protective trim — is where DIY jobs most often create problems down the road.

Will trimming affect my truck's weather sealing or road spray?

Removing the inner fender liner does reduce road spray deflection slightly, which can mean more debris reaching the engine bay from the wheel well. This is worth considering, especially in Alabama’s wet spring and summer conditions. In many cases we can retain partial liner sections that protect the upper wheel well while clearing the contact zone.

Does body trimming void my vehicle warranty?

Trimming plastic fender liners and wheel well trim doesn’t directly void your factory powertrain warranty. However, if a warranty claim involves components affected by the modification, the dealer has grounds to investigate. Most off-road builds that need trimming have already moved outside factory warranty territory for suspension and drivetrain purposes.

What's the most common trimming job you do on 4Runners?

On 5th-gen 4Runners, the most common job is trimming the lower front bumper support and inner fender liner where they contact a 285/70R17 tire at full lock on a 2 to 3 inch lift. Rear wheel well liner trimming is also common when a suspension system with more rear droop than stock is installed.
